Why do aging action stars go the direct to video route rather than make foreign films?

This is obviously something that has been going on for a while. People like Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme haven't really had any theatrical releases in the U.S. this century. Nicolas Cage has also been mostly going this route for several years now. And Wesley Snipes.

But now even Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis are doing these direct to video or VOD films. And I have to wonder why.

Stallone and Willis at least would be completely capable of moving into supporting roles in major films, but alternately, several Asian countries seem to still be producing a lot of action flicks.

Surely a Schwarzenegger/Jackie Chan team-up, for example, would have some appeal. Not to mention the doors it would open for foreign actors with American audiences. If Stallone makes an Asian Expendables with, say, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais, it introduces those actors to all of his fans.

I'm just wondering why they choose to go the direct to video route instead. Some well-made foreign films would let them finish their careers with dignity and possibly introduce America to the next Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Jet Li. It would be a positive for all involved.

(And before someone mentions it, I know that a new Terminator and a new Rambo will be coming to theaters later this year, but what about new standalone films like True Lies or Demolition Man? There doesn't seem to be much of a demand for that in this country.)
