Directors whose careers haven't lived up to their potential?

Simple question: which directors showed a ton of potential early in their career which they never really lived up to? Not that their more recent work is bad necessarily, just not what you'd hoped for.

I'd have to put Mario Van Peebles at the top of my list. He went from New Jack City to direct to video Nic Cage movies.

Craig Brewer is another I'd hoped would have a bigger career by now. I really enjoyed Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan... And then he just did the Footloose remake and a bunch of TV work.

I feel like Kevin Smith really began maturing as a writer and director with Chasing Amy and Dogma, but then immediately reverted back to his niche, in addition to a few attempts at more mainstream fare. Red State and Tusk were interesting, but still didn't manage to capture the promise he showed in his '90s work.

Another acclaimed '90s independent filmmaker, Robert Rodriguez, probably deserves mention as well. I haven't seen Alita: Battle Angel yet and have heard good things, but that doesn't change the fact that his work has been super inconsistent for years now.
