Paterson is by far the movie that has changed my life the most. What it manages to say about the creative process is unlike any other movie I have seen. A lot of films will fetishize or play up the struggles and pain behind creating art. Not many movies try to show something like a bus driver who just wants to write poetry for himself. That's what the main plot of Paterson is. A week in the life of a bus driver (Played by Adam Driver) who writes poetry on the side but keeps it to himself, while living with his girlfriend who constantly changes passions and keeps throwing herself and her work out there.
The best part about this movie is how non-judgemental it is. It's okay to make art and keep it for yourself. It's okay to create something and have it fail in the public eye. It's okay to be inspired by mundane things in every day life. It's okay to make something quickly and then never touch it again. The movie naturally touches on so many aspects of creativity and never once paints any of them negatively. Do what you want and make what you want, as long as doing it makes you happy, you will be happy.
Now if you think a movie about a week in the life of a bus driver sounds boring as hell? It probably will be for you, don't watch it. But it is a genuinely fantastic movie technically. If this sounds like the kind of movie you would enjoy I really do recommend it extremely highly. Let me know if you do watch it, what you thought, good or bad. Because like the movie shows, no creative output is inherently wrong or bad. Just do what makes you happy.
