Why do you think good science fiction is so difficult to get right?

For every Star Wars, for every Inception, for every District 9, there are 100 other bad examples of cliche/boring/underacted/low budget science fiction movies. I think it's one of the most difficult genres to get right, but why is that?

Why is it so hard to slot everything into place when there's so many ideas to be had?
