want to start this post by saying that I am a huge animation enthusiasts. I love animations and everything that goes into making it. I spend most of my days just looking online at the productions, concept arts and animation tricks that went into an animated film or show. I dream to one day start my own indie animation studio ,However I know this will be impossible as I'm only one out of a million who have that same dream and about 100,000 of those people are way better that me in the field. Anyway, I feel that animation has a lot of potential that has not yet been stratched , particularly when it comes to animated movies aimed for adults. There are a lot of stories to tell, adaptations to be made that can really only shine if they were in animated form. But the industry is not really to blame for that and more of the blame goes to the stigma that "Animation is for kids" that is so prominent in the West, especially North america.
It seems the general public don't really see Animation as Art anymore and instead just see them as something to keep your kids quiet for an hour and the people like me who do see the worth of animation are a huge minority, and sadly studios have no interest in cratering to a minority. It's why there is a lack of more serious adult animations, the few adult animations we have are either low budget raunchy comedies, really obscure foreign indie films or Anime (which has it's own fair share of stigmas). Chances are, if an animated movie doesn't have the Disney or Pixar logo, it will only barely make a fraction of it's budget back, For example Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse despite getting universal acclaim and an Oscar, only made a half of what the Incredibles 2 and Ralph breaks the Internet( both great films) made at the box-office , despite many agreeing that Spider-verse was a better movie and also featured an Iconic comic book character (Although the release window may have had something to do it). Even animated movies geared towards kids often follow trends like talking animals, memes, and being to wacky that they end up annoying adults ,However this is not bad all you need is a god script to make the film enjoyable,both Disney and Pixar and Dreamworks(to some degree) do this well, but it only further pushes animation back into that stigma. I say this because I do want to see and help make serious animated movies aimed for adults but I know animators don't want to go bankrupt in doing so.
Is there a way to beat this stigma ,so we can encourage more animators and film makers to push the genre to its potential. Trends do come and go and a lot of things that were scrutinized in the past like Video Games and Comic book adaptations are now being embraced by everyone. IMO, I think all we need is that one movie, that one studio that goes far and beyond with it's story and animation but also heavily promotes it . Into the Spider-Verse is a step in the right direction and I feel we need more movies like it. I leave the question up to you, Will their ever be a movie to break the stigma or will the stigma ever be broken at all?
